Description

Going on a trip with your dogs can be a lot of fun provided you're prepared with all your essential dog related items. We thought we'd start a checklist of those items to consider if you're traveling with your dog by car.

Here goes:

Dog Tags - These are so important if you get seperated from your dog.  It's one of the best ways to be located by the finder of your dog.  Make sure if you're traveling to have a dog tag that has your cell phone number on it.  No cell phone?  Then be sure you know how to call into your answering machine to get your messages.

Leash - This is usually a no brainer but in the frenzy of packing to leave, I've forgotten mine and didn't realize it until we made that first stop.  We always keep a spare leash in all the cars just in case.

Dog Food - Always bring enough dog food with you to last the length of your trip.  You won't know for certain that you'll be able to find your dog's food in the area where you are travelling to so it's always a good idea to bring your own supply.  Remember that sudden changes to your dogs food can cause digestive problems.  Not fun for you or the dog.

Water - Dogs drink a lot of water so make sure you have a supply in the car.  Water is easy enough to find along the way but you should have some handy for those times when they want a drink while travelling.

Water Bowl - There are many water bowls available but you need to consider how the dog travels in the car.  Are they crated in the back?  Then you'll need to provide water in the crate.  Are they within easy reach?  We use a clean plastic container that has a cover and is leak proof.  Fill it half way with cold water to prevent spills while opening it.  A spare water bottle is used for refills as needed.  There are several no spill bowls also available.

Toys and Treats - These are always a good idea to bring along in the car.  The toys can help to make to dog feel more comfortable.  We select longer lasting treats to keep them busy for a bit as well as satisfy.

Dog Towel - A towel will come in handy if it starts to rain or snow while traveling.  You'll want to dry off your dog before they get back into the car.  Mine always manage to jump in my seat which isn't a problem unless they are wet.

Proof of Vaccination/Health Certificate - Stop by your vet and get a copy especialy if traveling out of state.  You may need it at dog parks, kennels and most states require them as well.

Seat Belt Harness - If you don't have one already, consider getting one.  Harnesses are a great way to keep your dog safe while riding in the car by attaching it to a seat belt restraint system designed for dogs.  Some dogs feel more comfortable strapped in as it helps keep them steady during sudden stops or starts.  Keeping your dog secured in this fashion also provides you with confidence that they won't escape when you open the car doors.

Medicine - If your dog is taking any medicine be sure to bring enough along for the whole trip.

Brush - You won't want to forget your dog brush.  Looking good while on vacation is important to your dog too!

Dog First Aid Kit - Better to be ready if anything happens than not to.  You can also use the kit to hold any medications you might need to take along.  Throw in a tick removal tool and you should be ready for anything.

Waste Pick Up Bags - Help keep the places you visit clean by picking up after your dog.  Some cities and towns require it so make sure you bring along extra.
