Behaving Around Dogs

Return to the Articles List

Yes it's true; we humans need to understand about our behavior around dogs. After all, isn't that what all the trainers are telling us?

Here are a few rules to help everyone behave.

  • Ask for permission to approach. If the owner says yes, you need to ask the dog too.  Slowly extend a closed fist, palm side down for the dog to sniff.
  • Don't pat the dog on the head or on the back. They like the side of their neck stroked; chin scratches, rubbing around their ears or their side stroked in the direction of their fur.
  • Don't stare into their eyes unless you want to fight.
  • Don't bother them when they eat or sleep.
  • Don't run! Dogs like to chase. Stand still and be quiet, the dog will probably go away.

Start off with this short list and everyone should be off to a great start for a long lasting friendship with dogs.
